Get info about Garrett College emergency medical technician, registering for required degree courses, and taking practice exams for free online. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the population ages, medical care will continue to expand. If you complete the emergency medical technician (EMT) program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you, such as emergency care, nursing management, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the emergency medicine department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of emergency medical technician program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained EMTs, and of medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Garrett College.

EMTs and paramedics work both indoors and out, and in all types of weather. In general, there's a high risk for contracting illnesses or experiencing work-related injuries. In addition, emergency medical technicians and paramedics may be exposed to communicable diseases, such as hepatitis-b and AIDS, as well as to violence from mentally unstable or combative patients. The work is not only physically strenuous but can be stressful, involving life-or-death situations. Many EMTs and paramedics are required to work more than 40 hours a week.

The job prospects for paramedics and emergency medical technicians are good, particularly in larger cities. EMTs and paramedics who have advanced education and certification enjoy the best job prospects. Growth in employment opportunities for paramedics is largely due to increased call volumes of medical emergencies. In addition, the time that emergency medical technicians and paramedics spend with each patient is increasing. As a result, when an ambulance arrives, it takes longer to transfer the patient from the care of paramedics to the staff of the hospital's emergency room.

Dental Assistant Programs

In dentistry, there are three fast-growing employment fields. Dental assistants perform many tasks, ranging from providing patient care, to record-keeping and scheduling appointments. Dental lab technicians construct, or repair, dentures and prosthetics. Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth. They must also learn to take and develop dental x-rays. The median annual wage for dental hygienists was $52,330 in 2015, while dental assistants average $37,500 per year. Employment of dental assistants and hygienists is projected to grow 19% in the coming decade.

Dental hygienists need an associates degree in dental hygiene. The programs typically take 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory, clinical, and classes in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, and periodontics. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed, although requirements vary by state. The Commission on Dental Accreditation, part of the American Dental Association, has accredited more than 300 dental hygiene programs.
